Grow direct tour bookings by making your own website easier to buy from, following up with interested travelers, and measuring profit by channel. Keep online travel agencies where they bring valuable demand. The objective is a healthier sales mix, not a high direct-booking percentage at any cost.

Direct bookings still have costs: advertising, website software, payment processing, staff time, and customer support. Compare those costs fairly with marketplace commissions before deciding where to invest.

Start with the role of each channel

OTAs can introduce travelers who have never heard of your business. Your own website gives you more control over the presentation and booking journey. Repeat guests, referrals, local partnerships, and organic search can contribute different kinds of demand.

Arival’s Operator’s Marketing Playbook discusses declining direct-booking share and growing OTA influence. The practical response is to strengthen your own acquisition and conversion process while reviewing each channel’s contribution.

Respect the terms of the marketplaces you use. Do not move an active marketplace transaction outside the platform in violation of those terms.

Calculate contribution rather than commission alone

Consider this hypothetical $100 booking. The numbers illustrate a method; they are not typical industry rates.

Item Direct booking OTA booking
Revenue $100 $100
Tour delivery cost $45 $45
Channel acquisition or commission $12 advertising $22 commission
Other allocated channel costs $5 software, payment, and service $2 service
Illustrative contribution $38 $31

If direct acquisition rises from $12 to $25 with all else unchanged, direct contribution falls to $25. That is why “no OTA commission” does not automatically mean the more profitable sale. Adjust the worksheet for your contract and avoid counting payment costs twice when they are already included.

Remove uncertainty from the tour page

Before buying more traffic, inspect the page a visitor lands on. Can they understand the date, meeting point, duration, physical demands, inclusions, total price, and cancellation terms? Is the availability control usable on a phone?

Prioritize questions that repeatedly appear in your inbox. If travelers keep asking whether airport pickup is included, answer that clearly near the relevant itinerary or pricing information. Use authentic photos and accurate reviews with appropriate permission and attribution.

Make checkout a natural next step

Give travelers a clear action: check availability, book a departure, or request a quote. Do not label an inquiry form “Book now” if no reservation is created. Ask for information needed at that stage and explain why sensitive or unusual fields are required.

Test final pricing and payment failures. A beautiful tour page cannot compensate for a checkout that loses a selection or produces no confirmation. Track the transition from tour view to booking start to completed reservation.

Build useful acquisition routes

  • Search: publish detailed pages for the tours you actually operate and connect them with relevant destination information.
  • Local partners: agree on clear referral arrangements with compatible businesses and measure the resulting bookings.
  • Returning guests: offer relevant future experiences through permission-based communication.
  • Email inquiries: send a specific answer and a link to the appropriate departure or quote.
  • Paid campaigns: start with a defined offer, budget, and conversion measurement rather than broad traffic goals.

Google Search Essentials provides the baseline for making search content eligible and useful. Publishing more pages is not a substitute for answering real traveler questions accurately.

Follow up without creating pressure or confusion

For a legitimate inquiry, summarize the requested tour, dates, price assumptions, and next step. If availability is not held, say so. If a quote expires, use a real expiry condition rather than invented urgency.

Do not automatically add everyone who books to unrelated marketing campaigns. Use the consent and communication rules applicable to your audience. Separate operational booking messages from promotional messages.

A 30-day action plan

Period Action Evidence to collect
Days 1–7 Audit the three most important tour pages and test checkout Confusing details, errors, and baseline conversion counts
Days 8–14 Improve prices, inclusions, photos, and booking actions A record of the changes and their dates
Days 15–21 Improve inquiry replies and launch one measured acquisition effort Response time, qualified inquiries, and channel costs
Days 22–30 Review completed bookings and channel contribution Revenue, cancellations, costs, and next experiment

Small samples are noisy. A week with two bookings instead of one is not enough evidence to declare a permanent conversion improvement. Compare similar periods and note changes in seasonality, availability, and advertising.

Questions operators ask

Should I stop selling through OTAs? Only after understanding the incremental business they provide, contract obligations, and the demand you can replace profitably.

Should direct prices always be lower? Not necessarily. Review channel terms and consider service, clarity, and suitable packages instead of assuming discounts are the only advantage.

What metric matters most? Track completed, profitable bookings alongside direct share. A larger share of a shrinking business is not the outcome you want.

Choose one improvement you can measure this month. A clearer tour page and a reliable booking process are useful foundations before expanding marketing spend.
