Who it's for

Why operators use Currency switcher

Operators selling to international travellers who want to see, and pay, in a currency they understand.

Highlights

  • Real prices per currency on each tour, not live conversions at checkout
  • Approximate prices beside tours charged in your main currency
  • Automatic daily exchange rates from the European Central Bank reference rates, or your own
  • An optional markup, and a clear last-updated time in the console
  • If a rate update fails, the last good rates stay in use and you get an email

Prices travellers understand, charged honestly

An American traveller looking at a trek priced in Nepali rupees, or an Australian looking at euros, has to guess what it costs. Many then leave to do the sum elsewhere. The currency switcher lets visitors choose from up to 10 extra currencies, with your main currency always offered, and can pick a visitor’s currency automatically from their country or browser language until they choose. Their choice is remembered for a year.

The important part is how prices are charged. You set real prices per currency on each tour under Tours › Pricing. A tour priced in euros is charged in euros at that price: no live conversion at checkout, and no surprise when the card statement arrives. What a market pays is your business decision, not the day’s exchange rate.

Approximate prices for tours you haven’t priced

You don’t have to price every tour in every currency. Tours without a price in the visitor’s currency stay in your main currency, clearly labelled “Charged in …”, and can show an approximate price beside it, such as “≈ €92”. Checkout says plainly which currency the traveller will pay in.

Approximate prices use the rates on the Exchange rates page. By default these are the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates, rebased to your main currency, with optional overrides for any currency where you want your own rate. You can also enter all rates by hand. Currencies with an official fixed peg that the ECB doesn’t publish are derived from their anchor, for example the Nepali rupee from the Indian rupee and the Gulf currencies from the US dollar.

Markup, rounding and failed updates

Add a markup to approximate prices if you want them to sit on the safe side of the real conversion, and choose rounding: none, whole amounts, ending in .99, or the nearest 5. A worked example: your main currency is US dollars, a tour costs 100, and the rate is 0.92 euros. With a 2% markup and whole-amount rounding, visitors choosing euros see “≈ €94” beside the dollar price, and pay 100 dollars.

Rates update automatically every day, and the console shows when they last changed. If an update fails, the last good rates stay in use and your team gets one email about it, not one a day.

FAQ

Currency switcher: questions

Is the traveller charged the converted amount?

No. A tour with a price in the chosen currency is charged that price. A tour without one is charged in your main currency, and the approximate price is only a guide.

Where do the exchange rates come from?

By default from the European Central Bank’s daily reference rates. You can override any currency or enter all rates yourself.

What if the daily rate update fails?

The last good rates stay in use and your team is emailed once.

Does it choose the currency for visitors?

If you switch that on, visitors see their country’s currency, when you offer it, until they choose another.

Which plans include Currency switcher?

Currency switcher is available on Growth & Scale, at no extra cost.

How do I switch on Currency switcher?

In your Tourtify console, open Plugins, find it in the list and switch it on. Its settings open straight away, and you can switch it off again at any time.

Do I need a developer?

No. Plugins are built into Tourtify and set up from the console. Where an outside account is involved, such as a payment provider, you connect it by entering your account details.

Does Currency switcher work with my other plugins?

Yes. Every plugin is built and maintained by Tourtify, so they work together: discounts, deposits, vouchers and fees all add up correctly at checkout.
