Who it's for

Why operators use Khalti

Operators whose travellers pay in Nepal. Offering the payment methods people already use at home is one of the simplest ways to stop them abandoning checkout.

Highlights

  • Travellers pay with the Khalti wallet, mobile banking and cards
  • Money is paid into your own merchant account, never held by Tourtify
  • Payments are matched to the booking automatically, so balances and receipts stay correct
  • Works alongside Stripe and your other payment options

Good to know

  • Prices are charged in Nepali rupees (NPR).
  • You connect your own merchant account from Payments in your console.

Khalti for travellers paying in Nepal

For domestic travellers and trekkers who already hold a Khalti account, paying from the wallet or a linked mobile banking app is quicker than finding a card. The Khalti plugin takes the Khalti wallet, mobile banking and cards, and pays the money into your own Khalti merchant account.

Khalti works next to your other payment options. A tour priced in Nepali rupees can offer Khalti for local travellers and a card gateway or PayPal for visitors from abroad.

Nepali rupees only

Khalti takes payments in NPR and nothing else, so it appears at checkout only for tours with an NPR price. If your website's main currency is something else, the plugin's status panel says so: add NPR with the Currency switcher and give the tours you want to sell locally an NPR price.

Amounts are sent to Khalti in paisa, so the traveller is charged exactly the rupees and paisa shown at checkout.

How a Khalti payment is confirmed

Khalti sends the traveller back to your website with a status in the link, but Tourtify never relies on it. Every payment is confirmed with Khalti's lookup API, first when the traveller returns and then every few minutes for 26 hours in case they don't.

A Completed payment confirms the booking. A Pending payment is flagged and checked again. Payments Khalti reports as Expired or User canceled are closed, so the traveller can start again. Khalti payment links expire 60 minutes after they are created, so Tourtify keeps a Khalti checkout open for 45 minutes.

There are no webhooks to set up. The lookup API is the only source of truth, which keeps the setup to a single key.

Refunds through your Khalti dashboard

Khalti refunds are made in your Khalti merchant dashboard rather than from Tourtify. Refund the traveller there, then open the booking and choose "I refunded it in the provider's dashboard" so the booking, the traveller's balance and your reports stay correct.

Setting up Khalti

  1. 1Get a test merchant key. Create a test merchant account on Khalti's sandbox (dev.khalti.com) and copy the secret key from the merchant dashboard › Keys.
  2. 2Connect in Test mode. On the Payments page, paste the key and choose Test. Tourtify checks the key with Khalti's lookup API before saving.
  3. 3Price a tour in NPR. Add NPR with the Currency switcher if it isn't your main currency, and give the tour an NPR price.
  4. 4Make a sandbox booking. Pay with Khalti's test credentials and check the booking confirms.
  5. 5Switch to Live. Update the key with the live secret key from your khalti.com merchant dashboard and choose Live.

How payment providers plugins fit in

Payment provider plugins add the gateways travellers use at home, from PayPal to Mercado Pago, Paystack, Razorpay, KOMOJU or eSewa. Each connects your own merchant account, so money is paid to you directly and Tourtify takes no commission. Stripe is built in; travellers only see gateways that support the booking's currency.

Do I need to set up a webhook?

No. Khalti webhooks are not used; every payment is confirmed with the lookup API.

What does Khalti charge?

Check Khalti's merchant pricing. Tourtify takes no commission.
