Why international travellers ask for PayPal
Many travellers booking from abroad already have a PayPal account and would rather not type card details into a site they have just found. The PayPal plugin lets them pay with their PayPal balance or a card through PayPal, and the money goes straight to your own PayPal business account.
PayPal sits alongside Stripe and any other gateway you connect. Travellers choose it at checkout, and deposits, balances and receipts work the same way whichever option they pick. Tourtify takes no commission on the payment.
From PayPal approval to a confirmed booking
At checkout Tourtify creates a PayPal order for the amount due and sends the traveller to PayPal's page with a Pay now button. No shipping address is asked for. When the traveller approves and comes back, Tourtify reads the order from PayPal and captures it. The booking confirms only once PayPal reports the capture as completed.
If the traveller closes the tab after approving, Tourtify still finds the payment: pending payments are checked with PayPal every five minutes. An unapproved PayPal order can be approved for about three hours, so Tourtify keeps a PayPal checkout open for up to 150 minutes.
Sometimes PayPal captures a payment but holds the money, for example while it reviews the payment or an eCheck clears. Tourtify does not confirm the booking yet. It flags the booking for your team and keeps checking until PayPal releases the money or declines it.
Currencies PayPal can charge
PayPal appears at checkout only for tours priced in a currency it takes: AUD, BRL, CAD, CHF, CZK, DKK, EUR, GBP, HKD, HUF, ILS, JPY, MXN, MYR, NOK, NZD, PHP, PLN, SEK, SGD, THB, TWD and USD. If your website sells in another currency, the plugin's status panel warns you, and you can add a supported currency with the Currency switcher.
PayPal only takes whole amounts in HUF, JPY and TWD. A price with a fractional part in one of those currencies can't be charged through PayPal, so keep those prices to whole numbers.
Refunds, reversals and disputes
When you refund a booking in Tourtify, the refund is sent to PayPal against the original capture, in full or in part, with your reason passed to the traveller as a note. With the webhook in place, refunds you make in PayPal itself, and reversals PayPal makes after a chargeback, also show up on the booking.
The webhook also brings PayPal disputes into Tourtify, with their status, reason, stage and response deadline. You can answer a dispute from Tourtify: it sends PayPal a proof-of-fulfilment note and an evidence pack PDF built from the booking (confirmation, accepted terms and cancellation policy, waiver, check-in, messages and refunds). You can also accept the claim instead.
Setting up PayPal
- 1Create a PayPal app. In developer.paypal.com › Apps & Credentials, create an app for your business account. Use a sandbox app to test and a live app for real payments.
- 2Connect it on the Payments page. Paste the app's Client ID and Secret, and choose Test for sandbox keys or Live for live keys. Tourtify signs in to PayPal to check them before saving.
- 3Add the webhook in PayPal. Copy the webhook URL from the PayPal plugin and add it under your app's Webhooks, ticking the events listed next to the URL.
- 4Paste the Webhook ID. Copy the Webhook ID PayPal shows and paste it into the plugin's Webhooks section. Use the same app, sandbox or live, whose keys you connected.
- 5Make a test booking. Pay with a PayPal sandbox buyer account, check the booking confirms, then switch to your live app's keys.

Payment providers
How payment providers plugins fit in
Payment provider plugins add the gateways travellers use at home, from PayPal to Mercado Pago, Paystack, Razorpay, KOMOJU or eSewa. Each connects your own merchant account, so money is paid to you directly and Tourtify takes no commission. Stripe is built in; travellers only see gateways that support the booking's currency.

FAQ
PayPal: questions
Do payments work without the webhook?
Yes. Every payment is checked with PayPal directly. Without the webhook, though, refunds, reversals and disputes that happen in PayPal won't appear on your bookings.
Why doesn't PayPal show at checkout?
Usually because the tour is priced in a currency PayPal doesn't take. Price the tour in a supported currency, such as USD, EUR or GBP, and PayPal will appear.
What does PayPal charge?
PayPal's fees depend on your country and account, so check PayPal's pricing. Tourtify adds no commission to PayPal payments.
Which plans include PayPal?
PayPal is available on All plans, at no extra cost.
How do I switch on PayPal?
In your Tourtify console, open Plugins, find it in the list and switch it on. Its settings open straight away, and you can switch it off again at any time.
Do I need a developer?
No. Plugins are built into Tourtify and set up from the console. Where an outside account is involved, such as a payment provider, you connect it by entering your account details.
Does PayPal work with my other plugins?
Yes. Every plugin is built and maintained by Tourtify, so they work together: discounts, deposits, vouchers and fees all add up correctly at checkout.
